Born a Navy brat in Pensacola, Florida and spending most of my life
around coastal areas, I sometimes feel I have saltwater running through
my veins – mixed with a little rum of course. I have been sailing the
shores of Lake Pontchartrain and along the Gulf Coast with many
excursions to various corners of the Caribbean for almost 30 years now.
Yachts A Fun.Org is mainly a self-serving effort documenting these
sailing adventures over the years but it is also intended to be a constant
reminder to me of dreams and goals yet to be realized.
In 2003 while laying in St. George’s Harbor
aboard Kativa after completing the Charleston to
Bermuda regatta, I gazed across the bay looking
at all the cruising boats at anchor. I said to
myself, "I could do this". I could be on one of
these vessels experiencing a cruising lifestyle of exploring new shores and
enjoying the richness of diversity that comes from that lifestyle. Although I
didn't realize it then, I know now that was the point in my life when I decided
one day I would do that.
In 2005, I began to think about retirement and started planning for the outfitting of Sovereign for
Caribbean cruising. Sovereign was my third sailboat and is the boat of my dreams. She is a 1973 39-
foot C&C tall masted sloop. She is an excellent racer/cruiser and has maintained an outstanding race
record over the years. I first became acquainted with her in May of 1986 when I served as Watch
Captain on a return trip from Isla Mujeres Mexico. Prior to purchasing her, I made four other return trips
from Isla Mujeres as Captain. In October of 1994 I purchased her and began my adventures in
paradise.
Presently, Sovereign is laying at my friend James Hutchinson's dock in Eden Isles, Slidell La. Since
after Hurricane Katrina, we have been restoring her and outfitting her for extended cruising. Resources
have been limited and progress has been slow but Sovereign is coming back better than ever. It is now
the beginning of summer 2009 and I’m still working and thinking about retirement and going cruising.
Retirement is certain by this time next year and I am feeling an urgency to finish Sovereign. There are
so many things to do to prepare for retirement and extended cruising that it sometimes overwhelms me
to think about it. My cruising experiences are varied and my resources are moderate; so there aren’t
any guarantees. But I do have the passion to take off for a couple of years while I am still able. Once
underway, I hope to use this website to record my adventures and keep in touch with my friends. Come
